وتتنفس فيخيل إليها أن الهواء كثيف ثقيل ليس من الخفة ولا السلاسة بحيث ينفذ إلى الصدور بسهولة. ويشتد عليها الموقف حين يقذف بها خيالها من جديد إلى حيث تقف الفرقة التي يرعاها أبوها، وتنظر، فإذا كل أفرادها في ملابس سوداء لأن القائد الذي تخلى عنهم كان عزيزاً على الرغم من فشله، محبوباً على الرغم من سوء تصرفه.. يخدعون به الحوادث.. يبعث الطمأنينة في نفوس الناظرين سمته الضخم وهيكله العظيم. أشبه بالدبابة التي صنعها بعض المحاربين من الخشب فخدعوا بها العدو فترة من الزمن. ثم لا يطول موقفها أمام إخوتها المحزونين حتى ترى كأن يداً تجذبها من خلفها وتنظر فإذا به شريك حياتها المنشود يشير بيده الأخرى نحو الطريق.. ولكنها لا تتحرك. وتدفعه عن نفسها برفق!!
